I can't wait to share this great resource I created to foster a growth-mindset in our students! While I've seen many great resources out there for teaching kids about groWth-mindset, I haven't seen many that help reinforce growth-mindset throughout the year. First, if you are unfamiliar with growth mindset, I suggest reading Mindset: The New Psychology to Success by Carol S. Dweck. Also, try checking out the resources on https://www.mindsetworks.com and https://bit.ly/2mschlj.

Generally, these posters and activity pages can be used in any you see fit. I'll explain how I use them later in the post.

Before putting the posters up on the walls, I introduce them to the students one at a time to make sure the students understand and have some connection to each motto. I might ask students to silently color the page during our “soft start” or ask them to write down the phrases in their reader’s/writer’s notebooks. We’ll have a quick discussion about the motto and identify examples of living the motto might look like, or not look like.

The activity pages are a great tool for the first few days of school. I typically use the growth mindset activity page with figures as a modelling/guided practice before having the students complete their own on the blank page.

The “Journey to Success” is a page I give students to complete a few times a year. We start the first week and fill out our challenge, goal, and plans of action. The second or third week of school we reflect and revise if needed. Students who have achieved their goal will complete a new page with a new goal. I like to use this page as a guided break in the year. By tracking not only which goals students have achieved but how they achieved their goals, we can celebrate, revise, and truly practice the habits of a scholar with a growth mindset.

All in all, simply putting some “growth mindset” posters on a wall will not in itself foster a growth mindset. Consistent discussion, modelling, and reflection is what needs to happen. Hopefully this resources can support teachers in this effort. CLICK HERE FOR THE GROWN MINDSET POSTERS!
